COMICON- ADOPTED
We have great news Concord, #a5786249 from the Lancaster, shelter is safe on July 16, 2026. His new name is Comicon. He's a very cool dog. He's going to go to his foster home next week. He is available for adoption.
Comicon found himself at the lancaster, shelter when someone turned him in as a stray on june 29. The lancaster is overcapacity, and dogs do not get a very long time there before they are euthanized. Comicon was passed his 72 hour notice. A networker found a super nice couple in San Diego, who are willing to foster him. They have a few obligations coming up so we said that we could keep him at the sanctuary for a week and then he will go to San Diego. He saw our veterinarian. His bloodwork was good, but it turns out he had a perineal hernia in his colon and would need surgery to help him out. Poor guy. He had surgery on August 11, 2026 and it was successful. Comicon is very puppylike now! he is happy and playful. He is still the sweetest, most friendly dog! We are so glad he has such a wonderful forever home!
CHACHKI- ADOPTED
Is this not the cutest little dog!? This is mitzvah, #a2253462 now Chachki, ( and yes, it can be spelled without the t) (its Yiddish for little trinket) from the west valley shelter. This precious 15-year-old Chihuahua has owner surrendered on the 26. After having him for 14 years, they were moving out of the country and dumped him at the shelter. A volunteer reached out to us and asked if we could rescue this dog, we had a foster ready, so of course we saved him. He saw the veterinarian and then went to a foster home. In February, he had a dental and had rotten teeth removed. In August he went a on a golden getaway. His foster fell in love with him, even though he is difficult with her adult grandchildren. She adopted him on September 11, 2026. We're so glad we can give this little senior dog the best of the rest of his life .

CREME BRULE - ADOPTED
It has been another busy week at golden years dog sanctuary, but the highlight of the weekend, on August 29, 2026, was rescuing Oscar, #a5796595 now Comedic, from the SCV/Castaic Shelter. This little, 3.9 pound 16-year-old dog was surrendered to the shelter on August 21 after being a loving family member for many years. He was understandably scared on intake at the shelter. He had high FAS and was barking. Upon trying to do a physical examination, he was snappy. Because of his fear and willingness to bite, he was labeled "rescue only." A wonderful woman reached out to us and said she would give him a home! She made the 2 hour drive from ojai to meet us at the shelter. Comedic has a heart murmur, dental disease and a stiff gait. All issues we see in nearly every little dog. Comedic just knows he has a great new person and a nice bed which he snuggled right into.

On August 13, 2026 we could breathe a sigh of relief because Polly, #a5790561, now Creme Brule, is safe and in a foster home. We had until four p m on August 13, 2026, to rescue her, or she was going to be euthanized at the Downey shelter. Polly is a thirteen year old jindo mix, who was owner surrendered on July 21, 2026. She doesn't have any major medical issues. She doesn't really have any major behavior issues. They just didn't have any space. She is old, so she was expendable. Thankfully, a wonderful foster stepped up and said she would give her a home. We can't do this without the wonderful help of fosters like creme brulee's foster. join our team today. We will cover medical. You just need to give the dog a home.
So many dogs are being dumped in the shelters these days and seniors are among the first to be euthanized. They don't deserve to be tossed out like an old pair of shoes.
A week after we rescued Creme Brule, a family from Utah reached out. They said they wanted to adopt Creme Brule when she was at the shelter. So, they made the trip to los Angeles. They met her and then adopted her on August 28, 2026! Don't you just love happy endings!
CANA - ADOPTED
Look who is in a home on July 13, 2026, and not in a freezer at the shelter! Morbid thinking, perhaps, but it's true. if we didn't have a foster step up and we didn't get this dog out, she would have been killed ton July 13, 2026. I'm sure by now, you know who i'm talking about. This is Maria, #a5785201 now Cana from the Lancaster, shelter. She was brought to the shelter on June 24, 2026 as a stray. We didn't even know about this dog until yesterday. A networker reached out and said there was a foster. I asked the foster to please submit an application and she did. When I reached out to the shelter, they said we had until 4 PM on Monday to rescue her. It was Sunday afternoon! We didn't have a transporter; we weren't sure we were going to get a vet appointment, and we had no idea how we would transport the dog from sylmar to san diego. But this is what happens when you're committed to saving the lives of senior dogs. We found a transporter, we confirmed the foster, we got the vet appointment, and our wonderful foster made the 2.5 hour drive from san diego to pick up her new dog! Don't you just love happy endings? Cana had a sponge bath this afternoon and looks so happy in her new home. Of course her fosters fell in love and adopted her! Cana has a forever home as of August 24, 2026.
CANYON - ADOPTED
It has been a great week! Thursday, July 23, 2026, we were able to save rosco, #a5770685 from the baldwin park shelter. that's two dogs in two days from baldwin park! Rosco, now Canyon, was surrendered to the shelter on april 18, 2026. I can't believe this dog was in the shelter for 3 months without getting euthanized! Clearly, he must have been a shelter staff and volunteer favorite. I can see why! he is super friendly with people, and dogs, both large and small. at the shelter, as most dogs do, he developed an upper respiratory infection, which cleared up with medication. They even neutered him, which is so rare for a ten year old dog. he doesn't have any major health problems, other than his cauliflower ear, which has a slight ear infection. our veterinarian, put in ear medicine yesterday. canyon is in a temporary foster home until monday when his forever foster will take him home and give him the best of the rest of his life. Of course, his foster family fell in love and had to make it official. He has a forever home as of August 18, 2026.
CONFIDENCE - ADOPTED
On June 3, 2026, my employee called me at 5:30 in the morning asking if I knew anything about a dog outside the gate. I went to the front gate and could not believe what I saw. Someone left a german shepherd, in a crate along with two bags of dog food. She was very scared. She would not come out of the crate. We had to move her inside by putting the entire crate, with her inside, on the tractor. We moved her to the dog stall where she did not come out of the open crate until the next day. We could not get her to come out of the dog stall. She was fearful when we put a leash on her or tried to walk her, so we let her be. We wanted to give her time to get comfortable and not force her out of the stall, into a car, and into a veterinarian office. When she first arrived, she had developed mammary glands as if she just had puppies. The next day, they dried up. A physical exam led us to believe she was not pregnant. However, on June 17, 2026, she had puppies! The puppies were weaned on July 14, 2026 as she did not have enough milk to fed them. her puppies are in foster and still need forever homes! Here is the reel we created on the day she was dumped. Confidence went to a home for 2 days. She was understandably nervous in a new home and without her puppies. She was a little destructive when the adopter went to the market for 2 hours, so the adopter brought her back. Confidence is great with other dogs and horse! She would make a great barn dog! Luckily a few days after Confidence came back, a wonderful neighbor who has other dogs, a large property and a couple horses reached out. Confidence is so happy in this home. We are certain she has found her forever home! Her foster adopted her on August 17, 2026!
COMBAT - ADOPTED
Combat has a new forever foster and we could not be happier! Is this the cutest thing! Check out his freedom walk! Meet combat, aka Charlie, #a2252988 from the east valley shelter. This adorable 13-year-old Maltese only weighs 7 pounds and was brought to the shelter as a stray on January 22, 2026. He was immediately orange alerted for having a bad heart murmur, no teeth, his tongue hanging out...and all the typical senior dog stuff. We've stepped into action and really wanted to get him out. But we were waiting to find a foster. Thankfully someone stepped up and yesterday we were able to get him out. He's already been to the vet and had blood work. He has one canine tooth that's rotten, and the vet says that if he's doing well with his medication that we can consider, pulling it out in about a month. We're so happy we can give him the best of the rest of his life. Combat's foster had a vacation planned and so we found a temporary foster. Combat fell in love with the family and they fell in love with him! he was adopted on April 15, 2026. Then this family had to move out of the country to be with family. We found another foster. This foster also fell in love and adopted combat on August 17, 2026.
CALISTA - ADOPTED
Ok, so the only thing better than saving a dog on a freedom day is saving two dogs on a freedom day, JUly11, 2026.! Meet Calista, aka Little Miss Millie, #a5786266 from the Santa Clarita Valley shelter. Callista was owner surrendered on June 29, 2026, at the age of 13! She's a very sweet Bassett hound mix. She was lucky enough to be able to spend her time in foster home, and not have to be at the loud shelter. Someone reached out to us and said they really wanted to save this dog, and asked if we would pull her. We're not going to say no to that! So now, Calista, will have the best of the rest of her life. She saw our veterinarian. She has lots of little lumps and bumps. The veterinarian did a needle aspiration to see if we have anything to worry about. Hopefully, all will be ok. If not, surgery will be in the future to get as healthy as possible.
CLAUS - ADOPTED
Look who is safe!!! This is azocar, #a2171035, now Claus. Claus came to the shelter on November 7th, 2024, as a stray. His coat was unkempt, and he was filled with fleas. He also had difficulty walking. while at the shelter, he started vomiting. So, of course, they put him on a medical alert with a deadline for December 5, 2024. Someone reached out to us to foster, and we were able to rescue this wonderful dog. The first foster could not keep Claus, but then we found an amazing foster who has fostered other large dogs for us before. We took care of his many meidcal issues and had him neutered. Claus does not know he is a senior! he loves to play with toys and is happier outside under a tree than in his house. His foster gives him space to be where he wants to be. After almost 2 years, it was clear, Claus was not going anywhere else! He was adopted by his foster on August 9 2026.
CARDINAL - ADOPTED
On May 22, 2026, we had the pleasure of rescuing balu, #a4929356 from the santa clarita valley shelter. There wasn't even a post about this dog. We knew about him because Susan volunteers at that shelter and they asked me if I would help him. Lucky for him, a space opened up because we said goodbye to crane the week before. To honor crane, we named him cardinal. Just look how happy he is after being rescued! he knows he will have the best of the rest of his life. He is 13 years old, but you would never know it! One of our fosters fell in love with Cardinal and took him home for a two week golden getaway. He has a forever home now and was adopted on August 3, 2026.
CHANCELLOR - ADOPTED
The year ain't over yet! December 27, 2025, we rescued Michael, #A5743192 from the castaic shelter. Michael is a 10-year-old neutered male pit mix that was brought to the shelters as a stray on December 8. He had a microchip. The shelter reached out to his owners and they didn't want him back! While waiting for someone to choose him, he developed an upper respiratory infection. It became critical in a get him out as soon as possible. The wonderful volunteers networked for a foster, knowing we could pull him. Luckily a wonderful couple stepped up and said they would take him . He saw our veterinarian and was treated for pneumonia. When he was better, he had surgery to remove the bleeding growth on his leg . His first foster had to leave town and we found a second foster for him. At that home, the resident dogs didn't like him much. So we found him a third foster, and that foster fell in love and adopted him on August 14, 2026.
CHUG - ADOPTED
We are all smiles....as he should be. This is chug, aka spanky,#a2217522 from the West LA shelter. This sweet 14-year-old Chihuahua was owner surrendered for medical reasons on August 26, 2025. We rescued him on August 31, 2025. When we saw the medical alert email, we had to get him out. We couldn't let this poor old guy sit in the shelter. We found a wonderful foster, and we were able to get him out. We're so glad to be able to give these dogs the best of the rest of their life. Thanks to a wonderful grant from the @greymuzzleorg his first veterinarian exam and bloodwork is covered! Become a guardian, angel and help us support chug to have the best of the rest of his life with any medical care he needs. his foster is love and never wanted to see him go anywhere else, so she adopted him on August 6, 2026.
CIGAR - ADOPTED
We had a lot of goodbyes this week. Knowing they had the best of the rest of their lives provides comfort and closure. But nothing puts us in a great mood like saving dogs! Meet cigar, aka Earl, #A5778687 . He is a 14 year old blind, chiweenie who was brought to the santa clarita valley shelter as a stray on May 24, 2026. The shelter is at capacity and euthanised six nice adoptable dogs this week. we couldn't let these this senior go to the chopping block. Our temporary foster reached out and said that she could take him if we would pull him. So of course, we arranged for him to get out of the shelter as soon as possible. We pulled him and Cameo on June 19, 2026. Cigar had his veterinarian visit and bloodwork on June 24, 2026. Turns out he and cameo both had pneumonia. They went on antibiotics and recovered. Cigar is doing well and is eating and enjoying himself. His foster fell in love with him and adopted him on August 5, 2026.
CARROT - ADOPTED
May 14, 2026 was such a crazy busy day, that I didn't even share our great news of the day until May 15. We rescued louie #a2265741 from the north central shelter. Louie, now carrot, is just the sweetest thing! He has the most wonderful foster and we're so happy to give him the best of the rest of his life. He is a 10 year old terrier mix who has typical senior issues such as dental disease. He also has thickening of his skin. Bloodwork revealed he does not have a thyroid condition or Cushing's disease. So we are treating his skin with topical and oral medications. he is very happy in his forever foster home! Carrot was adopted by his foster family on July 24, 2026.
COMPLICATED - ADOPTED
We were not planning on saving another life on May 28, 2026, but who am to say no when death is on the line. So meet Complicated, aka nugget. Nugget, #a2273170 is a 10 year old Australian shepherd who was brought to the west valley shelter as a stray on may 16, 2026. He had a large mass on his face and smaller masses on his chest and paw. He quickly came shelter volunteer favorite, yet no one wanted to adopt him. He had a deadline for last week. We asked for an extension, hoping that we would find a foster. She granted the extension that we have not been able to find a foster. For whatever reason, the veterinarian at the shelter put a drain in his tumor. Today, he shelter veterinarian felt that he was suffering and wanted to euthanize him. A volunteer reached out to ask. If we could please help him. My veterinarian was able to put him in an appointment today. So I said we would take him even though we didn't have a plan, which I never do. But the universe was looking out for him as someone who previously submitted an application called and said they they could temporarily foster a dog for two weeks. We do need to find a forever foster asap. Our veterinarian did blood work and a needle aspiration on the tumor. hopefully we'll have more answers about his health in a few days. In the meantime, he is a very sweet, calm dog. he loves going on walks and loves being with people. Complicated went to a foster home on June 28, 2026. The foster love him and adopted him on July 13, 2026. here is his freedom walk!
CYPRESS- ADOPTED
Drumroll please.....we did it! Philip, #A2271501 from the east valley shelter is safe on June 8, 2026! Philip had a euthanasia date of June 5, 2026. He has had no interest from rescues and there's no social media posts on this dog. We didn't have a foster for him, we knew we would find a foster, so we asked the shelter for an extension and they gave us until tuesday. Over the weekend we verified our foster. on Monday June 8, 2026, we confirmed our pull, and snagged him out of the shelter. We didn't get an exit video, so we took this cute little video of him walking down the hallway of the veterinarian office. Philip, now Cypress, is the sweetest thing! He had a mass removed at the shelter during his stay. He has other masses, sever dental disease and is simply old. We rescued him and immediately took him to our veterinarian for an exam and bloodwork. His foster fell in love and adopted him on July 8, 2026. we know he will have the best of the rest of his life .
COCONUT - ADOPTED
And now back to our regular programing.....today we had a plan in place to rescue Nelly,#a2264363 from the north central shelter. Nelly, now Coconut, is just the cutest little thing! she is so happy. She was constantly wagging her tail the entire time she was at the vet. She loved meeting Chipper. When we took her to her foster home, she immediately followed her foster mom into the house, met the other dogs and made herself at home on the biggest bed biggest bed in the house. The coconut sized mass is, unfortunately, not a tumor, but a hernia with her intestines inside. It is not preventing her from having regular poops. As she demonstrated to us, we did blood work today and bloodwork is good. She had surgery to repair the hernia and all went well! The person who transported Coconut from the shelter to the veterinarian office fell in love with Coconut and adopted her on July 3, 2026 We love happy endings!
CALLAHAN- ADOPTED
On January 12, 2026, we rescued Rocky, #a4871718, now Callahan, from the Downey shelter. He is the 400th dog we have rescued since the inception of Golden years Dog Sanctuary in September of 2017! Rocky. Now, Callahan, was owner surrendered to the downy shelter on November 25, 2025. He was very friendly with people. He had a good behavior assessment. And yet nobody wanted him. His 72 hour notice came and went. His deadline for euthanasia came and went. A networker reached out to us with a foster. We reached out to the shelter saying we could pull the dog, and then the foster backed out. We thought all hope was lost. But then the networker found a second foster, and when I reached out to the shelter days later, Rocky was still there. So we made a plan, and he was rescued! He went to his foster home in San diego the next day. His foster moved out of state and we needed a foster fast! We found a temporary foster in San diego and then, we found him a great foster. The third home was the charm as his fosters fell in love an adopted jhim on June 26, 2026.
CHOPIN - ADOPTED
Did you hear the great news? Lalo is free on November 17, 2025 after ;being at the shelter for over 8 months! That is more than 240 days in a small concrete cell. A networker put us in touch with someone who fostered for us once before, and voila! Lalo, now Chopin, just began the best of the rest of his life. Lalo, a 10 year old white shepherd was surrendered to the shelter on March 8, 2025. He had a family and a furry friend. All that left him in an instant, and he sat for over eight months (nearly 240 days) in a small concrete kennel waiting for someone to adopt him. The chance was slim. He was a large dog with medical issues including bad skin, arthritis, difficulty getting up, and being underweight. On top of that, he entered the shelter angry and difficult to handle. Behavior notes showed that he was a friendly dog who just loved attention. he was not aggressive with other dogs. During his stay at the shelter, his skin cleared up and he gained weight. But, at one point he had a URI and his arthritis was getting worse by the day. He saw our veterinarian. He had several laser treatments for his arthritis and is now on supplements and medication. he is doing great and his foster family loves him! He was adopted on June 25, 2026.
CHALLAH - ADOPTED
CHINCHILLA - ADOPTED
On June 6, 2026, we rescued 15 year old Chloe, #a5778501 from the downey shelter. She came in as a stray, but she had an old microchip number. Her birthdate is listed as April 1, 2011. no joke, she's fifteen years old and was dumped at the shelter! Thankfully, we found a most wonderful foster who's willing to give her the best of the rest of her life. We named her challah, which is bread in hebrew. She saw our veterinarian and her bloodwork was surprisingly good! We know she needs to gain weight. She also has a little bit of separation anxiety, so we're working on that. Its very typical for dogs when they first get out of the shelter. Thankfully our foster is patient and loving and helping challah feel comfortable and realize she is hit the jackpot with this home. Challah's foster is so smitten with her, that she adopted her on June 10, 2026!
CHINCHILLA - ADOPTED

Saturday, September 6, 2025, was a great day. We rescued this "rescue only" very old chihuahua. Meet Chinchilla, aka Baby, #a4114885, from the Downey shelter! This poor 16 year old dog was brought to the shelter as a "stray" on August 23rd. He has an old ID# so was in the shelter once before. He is blind and has no teeth. Oddly, he was found with sutures and drains in his neck. It looks like he was bitten by another dog. We will never know what happened to him. But we do know that he's very sensitive about being touched around his neck. The shelter did remove the stitches and the drains. his neck is healing up very nicely. But he's still blind and has no teeth. The shelter said his prognosis was poor and sent out an urgent medical alert on him. We had a foster, reach out to us and say she could foster, so of course we jumped at the opportunity to get him out of the shelter and give him the bes of the rest of his life. We don't know what time he has left, but we know that every day will be awesome. Chinchilla was at a foster home with other dogs. Someone who worked where chinchilla lives fell in love with him and adopted him on June 5, 2026! We are so happy for chinchilla. His new owner said, chinchilla deserves a couch of his own!
CHIPPER - ADOPTED
Today was better than great! This amazing, sweet, friendly dog is rosa,#a2264950. We renamed her Chipper. She almost wasn't saved. This dog was on her radar, and we were waiting to find a foster. Yesterday staff from the shelter called and said that rosa's deadline was 4 PM on Tuesday. They wanted to know if we could pull her. However, they left the message on my home phone and not my cell phone.i dont check those messages as often. Good thing I checked the machine at 630am. Once i heard the message, I scrambled to get a foster and transport. I had both secure before 8am and contacted shelter staff to verify we could pull her. I only hoped I wasn't too late. And I was not! We rescued her!
Chipper has an amazing foster. She saw the vet today we started her on medicine for the glaucoma in her eye. The medicine did not do much to help the discomfort with her eye. She is scheduled to have her removed in June, 2026. In the meantime, the foster and her family love chipper and want to give her a forever home. So she was adopted on May 30, 2026.
CURTIS - ADOPTED
On October 30, 2021, after sitting in the shelter since December 20, 2020, we rescued Pilot, #A1961992 now Curtis. He was in the shelter so long, he had a birthday and turned 10 at the shelter. He came to the South LA Shelter with another dog, who was adopted. Curtis was left behind/. it is so difficult to get a black, senior, pit bull with minor medical issues out of the shelter. He was a staff favorite and yet he sat. we worked for months trying to save him. Finally, someone stepped up and we rescued him. He has the best home! his foster finally adopted him and made it official after 15 months! Curtis has the best life. Check out what Curtis had to say: My favorite things to do are: rolling on my back outside, snuggling with my brother, Marvin, even though there are plenty of beds available, getting my belly rubbed, going for walks and greeting all the other doggies with a friendly tail wag.
